Hello from the newest Radio 1/1Xtra Interns. Russell, Katie and David!
Hello followers! My name is Russell James, most people call me RJ for short. I’m 22 years old, originally from Dublin in Ireland but I moved to London earlier this year to try and make a big bold new step towards a career in radio and amazingly, here I am at BBC Radio 1/1Xtra for the next two months. To say I am excited is the understatement of the century but hopefully through the magic of the internet, we can share with you a bit more about the behind-the-scenes world of these two stations.
I’ve been doing bits of radio since I was 16, then while at uni became heavily involved in my college radio at DCUfm in Dublin City University. By some miracle, I was then awarded Best Student DJ in Ireland in 2010 which was crazy. Then during my final year, I was one of two station managers and loved every second of it. Since then I’ve been working on some other radio projects and online radio stations as well as co-founding and co-writing on my food blog.
For two weeks, I’ll be working with the Live Events team for the Teen Awards then two weeks on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show with Nick Grimshaw, then a week with the lovely Sarah-Jane Crawford on 1Xtra.
Lovely to be acquainted with you- please get in touch, ask us questions and all that.
Hi guys, pleasure to meet you all and I hope you’ll join us on this unreal journey over the next few months! You won’t be surprised to hear that I cannot believe my luck to be here. I’m 23, Northern Irish and have moved over to London (literally last week fact fans) chasing the dream and what better way to start realising it than at the mighty Radio 1 & 1Xtra HQ right? See followers, dreams DO come true!
I’m a Uni.Westminster Public Relations graduate, with a serious passion for music. I’m a new music geek, dedicated to discovering new tracks, artists and events - something which seriously excites me. Plus in a digital age society, radio is still as important and influential as ever. I combine my love of music with another passion of mine which is writing. Over the past year I’ve reviewed tracks, albums and conducted interviews with fresh talent in a bit to create as much opportunity and gain as large an array of experience for myself as possible. Similarly, I write a blog alongside my sister to simply just document the music and things we are pumped about and share that with others.
Over the next few months I’m getting the chance to work on shows such as The Scott Mills Show and Dan & Phil plus working alongside departments such as interactive and ID which is very surreal and exciting! Myself and my new radio husbands, interns Russell & David also found out some pretty exciting news today which we look forward to sharing with you so stay tuned.
Ask us anything, we want you to share this with us. Finally, my favourite song of all time is Stardust - Music Sounds Better With You, go listen and go enjoy your day! You’re welcome.
Last but not least I’m David, the third and final intern for this round’s ‘Take It On Scheme’. I am a 21 year old Londoner and just graduated from the University of Nottingham where I studied English. But enough of the boring stuff, more about Radio 1 & 1xtra!
We have only been here for three days but already it has been an amazing experience, from seeing our favorite presenters to meeting amazing artists like John Newman and Fuse ODG, sitting in on Greg James and the playlist meetings for both stations have been personal highlights so far!
Over the next 2 months we will be giving you all an insight into the wonderful world which is Radio 1/ 1xtra as well as a glimpse into life as an intern. During my time here I will be working with a great mix of different teams and departments such as: ideas and development, Mistajam, Fearne Cotton and Station Sound.
Katie, Russell and I will be updating you with all the goings on of our time at Radio 1 & 1xtra, including offering any useful tips for those wanting to get involved with radio, so make sure you keep posted to this Tumblr page.
Speak to you all later,
